Luther was my pool and billiards hero. Well my biggest and oldest one. Probably because he was from North Carolina too and he also loved the game so passionately. It showed in his game. Today he is considered by many as being the best 9 Ball Player who ever lived. He played old rules tournament 9 ball before Texas Express rules came along and before the rotation game of 9 ball was turned into a "break contest," back in the days when the game of 9 Ball was much more like a beautiful game of chess. All ball fouls spotted, scratch on the break all balls spotted, ball in hand behind the line....

Why did they call him Wimpy? Luther Lassiter picked up the nickname Wimpy after the Popeye cartoon character who loved to eat hamburgers at a baseball game after consuming numerous sodas and several hot dogs. Lassiter lost interest in baseball when he discovered the game of Pocket Billiards but the nickname stayed with him.

Luther would rack and play at least one game of pool on his home table everyday. With one day exception, the day he died. He got up broke a rack of billiard balls and left them scattered on the pool table. Regrettably, I never had the honor of seeing Luther play in person. But! I did see him once in person. The year was 1987 at Q Masters Billiards at the US Open in Norfolk Virginia, the year before Luther Lassiter died.

Luther Lassiter won 6 World Championships and a number of professional sports titles playing 9 ball, straight pool, one pocket ... He was inducted into the BCA (Billiards Congress of America) in 1983 and into the North Carolina Sports Hall Of Fame that same Year.

By all accounts, Luther Lassiter typified the quiet southern gentleman, just another reason I consider him my biggest pool playing hero of the past. Who is my biggest hero living? Easy! Buddy "the rifleman" Hall, a good man, a good friend, and a great player!
